Don't cry for me, Generation X. The truth is, I never left you...

Warning: This blog post is a little Evita-esque.

I came across this video on You Tube while researching Generation X. I am curious, what emotions it evokes in you as you watch it? (I apologize in advance for some of the racier photos. Really, a much better presentation awaits us all. Hopefully, someone will take it on.)

I remember this song from the mid 1990s. The place it takes me to is so private and personal, I'll never write about it - not here anyway. (All blog posts are Polaroids, don't you think? Like Billy Joel's song, "we only reveal what we want you to see..." In this regard, every noteworthy writer, blogger or not, is actually quite adept at manipulation.)

I am currently working on a major Generation X project. By contract, I can't discuss it until it is completed. What I can say is that this project has taken me across the diverse landscape of Generation X, which includes some rough terrain. My journey at times has been hilarious and the laughter, side splitting. It has also not been without tears. Cry over Generation X? Yes. Why? Because, it is very difficult for me, personally, to read about the collective disappointments people endure on a generational scale without feeling the need to talk about God's love. And, so inside me grows a compassion and passion for a generation so extraordinary in so many ways, and yet, disadvantaged by a profound lack of generational awareness. Also lacking in large measure is the collective belonging and dialogue that occurs when that awareness is present.

...All through my wild days
My mad existence
I kept my promise
Don't keep your distance

And as for fortune, and as for fame
I never invited them in
Though it seemed to the world they were all I desired

They are illusions
They are not the solutions
they promised to be
The answer was here all the time
I love you and hope you love me...

Ah, a little Soul Asylum. I loved that lead singer til he started dating Winona Ryder.

I enjoyed the video-brought back a lot of happy memories for me--well maybe happy isn't the right word--bittersweet probably is.

Interesting. What is Monica Lewinsky doing these days? Last I heard, she took a job in our area, but I think it was just a rumor.

I still remember Pamela Anderson from her Home Improvement days. She was normal back then.

Hi Jen, found your blog via Le at Third on the Right.

Had to come over and comment as a Gen-Xer (67) who by the age of 12 had memorised the entire soundtrack to Evita! (mmm, yes, I know...)

Now I've got that off my chest I can go back and watch the vid.

Fascinating-sounding project.

Excellent, excellent post. I love the video. But GenX remember, it is through these dissapointments, and let downs throughout our lives that have led us to our gritty strength as a generation. We can use lessons learned from our past, and lessons we are learning from the present, and leave this world a lot better than when we came into it.
