The most timely and comprehensive resource for information regarding issues impacting women in Oklahoma, is Dr. Jean Warner's blog, Oklahoma Women. Bookmark it, fave it, blog roll it and visit it often. I learn something new every time I do. After awhile, you'll wonder what you did before you discovered it; probably lived in the dark or under a rock or something. I sure did.

Wow! I feel for those women. Adversity can create so many seriously bad situations - and that law regarding rape certainly ain't helping!
We need to pray for them that they will find ways to rise above their circumstances and make something positive of their lives. That doesn't sound flippant, does it? It's not meant to be.
You certainly are not the average Oklahoman woman. More's the pity - for them.

Startling statistics. Some I was aware & some I was not. Thank you for enlightening all of us.
Blessed be...
Jen--
I never realized how serious the plite Oklahoma Women face. The statistics are shocking at most! I want to join The Oklahoma Women's Coalition. Thanks for the information.
Hugs-- Mom
I find these statistics deeply troubling. Especially the one about single moms in prison (who's looking after the kids then?), the dismal post-secondary education rate, and the incarceration rate, and ...oh, just all of them!
I didn't know any of these facts. Thanks for bringing them to my attention.
Jen these are the kind of stats that make me shudder and shake with fear for future generations.
The no rape within marriage law makes me feel violently ill.
The ramifications of this disgraceful position is horrifing.
The message it sends is archaic ... (?) Wives a property, say no more.
What this brings home to me is the responsibility we have as mothers of boys to be damn sure we raise boys into men who understand the value of women.
I sometimes make MIC role his eyes because I pull him up on something I find unacceptable - not because he has wounded me - but soley because he has said it in front of the boys. It is a rare occurance and a product of his generation and upbringing - but I will not have it perpetuated.
Mostly I want my boys to know women have an equal ability to voice and particpate and contribute and be heard and be valued.
You have obviously hit a nerve here with me as my fingers are flying ... excuse spelling.
One of my major barneys with some structured religon is that I see it as another means for keeping 'women in their places'.
Spread the word Jen - if it gets us thinking and consciously making a better effort as individuals and society as a whole it was time well spent.
You have my love le
One of the projects we are doing in OK as a Girl Scout Council (I am also a board member of the OWC (OK Women's Coalition board) is serving the daughters of incarcerated OK women in 5 prisons in the state. Major state foundations are supporting this cause where we provide a program for the Moms in prison and their daughters and we also bring them together for fun and serious dialouge. We are also collaborating with the local Technology Center to provide enhanced classes/training on welding so that when these women are released they will be able to go into a high paying job (hiring than working at a drive in restaurant like Sonic or flipping hamburgers at McDonalds. In these cases we are also providing the program for the sons as well as the daughters of the incarcerated Moms. We are a Girl Scout Council on the move addressing the problem of support to the kids as well as a package of true reform for the Moms! Karen Morgan, Girl Scouts of Eastern Oklahoma
