Blue Plate Midday Snack

I must be asleep at the wheel. I've think I've missed this blogger despite all my Generation X expeditions. This writer notes that President Obama's inaugural address was directed to members of Generation X:

"Less measurable but no less profound is a sapping of confidence across our land — a nagging fear that America’s decline is inevitable, and that the next generation must lower its sights."

The name of this blog is rather ominous. The Icepick Cometh. Yow. But, the content is great and Generation X is a major tag.

I have to say, I'm still wrapping my mind around this notion of "Generation X." In fact, I never really gave it any thought until you linked to my blog. Maybe it's actually a symptom of our generation that many of us don't see ourselves belonging to any defined group. In any case, thanks for shinging a light on US. We all know ourselves a little more clearly because of you.

Thanks for reading, JenX, and thanks for the plug. I enjoy your blog too.

It's great you promote so many other Gen X voices here. These are ominous times indeed, but discovering so many diverse Generation X writers makes wandering in the proverbial wilderness a little more comforting.

That said, this cynic is optimistic that our first fellow Gen X'er in the White House can make a real difference.

(And yes, he is a Gen X'er. I've read that other theory about the new President being a member of some virally marketed recently made-up generation between the Baby Boomers and Generation X. Nice try, but I think History will prove our view correct; though of course, we'll need to wait and see. "(T)he spirit of an age is best defined in retrospect," William Safire wrote in an interesting column on the naming of generations two months ago in the New York Times, and I tend to agree with him. But I digress.)

I am the same age as Obama almost to the day and I've never heard my generation called anything - certainly not Gen X, until recently. So now you have to tell me what this means. I have no idea. And I am definitely not a Baby Boomer. Maybe we are just the in-between generation, sort of purple.

@ Sulustu and T.R. - No other generation has ever been more disconnected with their generation than Generation X or what Howe and Strauss called the 13th Generation. The more you read Gen X memoirs, the more the stories resonate. I have an entire list of things than define the collective persona of Gen X. I'll find it and post it.

@icepick - another blogger and I are collecting Gen X memoirs. I hope you'll submit one! I've added you to my blog roll. You're from Texas, right?

Thanks for the Gen X memoir consideration. If you can, please e-mail me the details (deadline, length, etc.).
