I'm Giving Away A Secret...

...The Secret of Roan Inish.
And, you don't have to do anything to win it.

I read the blog, FeverBee on a pretty regular basis. I don't always understand everything this brilliant Millennial writes about building a blog community, but one thing he has convinced me of is the need to recognize my blog community in special ways. This is easier said than done.

Recently, I won a redeemable code to Pro Flowers valued at $70, from the blogger Daddy Forever. One of the groups of people he recognized in this giveaway were people who commented frequently on his blog. I thought that was terrific. None of us had to do anything. We were automatically entered in a random drawing based on what we had already done - participated regularly in his blog community. (Thanks, DF!)

Borrowing from that spirit, I will host three giveaways in the month of March. The first will be in celebration of my father's 79th birthday, which is Wednesday, March 4. I will give away a DVD of one of my favorite movies, The Secret of Roan Inish. It is "a gentle charming tale of a girl who is sent to live with her grandparents and discovers the myths and magic that have affected her family." It is set on the moody west coast of Ireland. There is nothing better on a cool, foggy day than this movie with a hot cup of tea or a bowl of soup and warm bread. We always have it with one or the other. (Added points if it's raining.) I am so excited to introduce this movie to all of you.

Everyone who has commented on this blog in the last 90 days or who currently links to this blog, will be entered in the drawing.

P.S. To Kit Albritton, wherever you are: Thank you for introducing me to this movie 14 years ago. You were a blessing then and now.

Hi Jen-
You are prolific blogger..I stop by every few days and I'm 5 posts behind :) Love the neon OKC pics. I think you have convinced me to put OKC on my USA travel list.

The religion post, very interesting. I am one of the 60% you mentioned. My husband and I have been trying to return to church but its been hard for us and I can't explain why exactly, but being a classic Xer I really shy away from joining, anything. We have found a new denomination that is more for us so we will see.

The garden...love it and I'm so jealous that you can start already. We have a small suburban garden, my kids have loved it since they were very small. Favorites have been carrots, all the herbs, and pumpkins. Although I have yet to get the pumpkin to make it until Oct, it turns orange around July.

I'll stop hogging up your comment space now.

@jenny - I need to stop it (blogging) and do some laundry. =)

Regarding travel in the U.S, what kinds of things do you generally like to do/see?

I completely understand your how hard it is to return to church. I've been wanting to find more time to write about Gen X and religion, particularly our generation's involvement in the emergent church.

I think I'm going to do an herb garden in pots. I bought basic. I love herbs - all those awesome fragrants - chocolate mint has always been so magical to me!

I haven't seen this movie in years, but I do love it. It's one I've always meant to own, but have never picked up. We do have a number of Irish films - one you may not have seen is "Into the West" with Gabriel Byrne. It's about a family of tinkers in Ireland.
Speaking of which - there was a movie when I was a kid, called "Flight of the Doves". It starred two of the actors from 1968's Oscar-winner, "Oliver": Ron Moody, as the master-of-disguise villain and Jack Wild as one of a pair of brothers and sisters who are on the run (hence, the title). There's a song in it called, "You Don't Have to Be Irish, To Be Irish" (it's also a bit of musical as well as a thriller (you can't do an Irish film without a bit of music, can you?) and I still recall it even though I saw the film when I was 8 or 9 years old. It is a fantastic film that I absolutely loved, but so hard to find anywhere. If you ever see it, buy it, your family will love it!

@Kat - I'm building my Irish movie collection, so this will help! I have not heard of the G. Byrne film. He's one of my favorite actors, though - ever since Little Women. Thank you! And, good luck. Maybe you'll win!!!

on chocolate mint...we grew that last year. I did it so my kids could suck the leaves :) They loved it!

In case you don't know...make sure you grow that in a pot, or any mint, they are SUPER aggressive and will take over a garden. Especially when they don't have a very harsh winter to kill them off (and you don't by the way).
