Chernobyl Anniversary - 23 Years

Today is the 23rd anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant disaster, which killed 31 people. This is an important mile marker on the collective persona of Generation X.

If you're a member of Generation X, did growing up with the threat of nuclear war impact your childhood and if so, how? Do you remember where you were when you learned of this disaster?

I've spent a little time in Belarus, which was heavily impacted by Chernobyl. Those experiences pretty much changed my view of the world.

I know that you addressed Generation X with your question and I'm a Boomer but I don't think you would mind.

One of my most vivid dreams/nightmares that I have had almost all my life involves being in the middle of a field of icbm missile silos with the hatches open and smoke trails from the launched missiles arcing to the north.

Yep, the prospect of nuclear war scares the bejeebers out of me and has for a long time.

My step-daughter was studying in Germany at the time and got some of the fallout. Very unsettling. I assume you have seen the video taken by the young woman who toured the town (yes, she must be crazy but so powerful). Here is a little of it:

@CariOKie - I'd love to hear more!

@Yogi - You're right - I should NOT have limited that ? to Generation X. Bejeebers - one of my favorite words!

@JeanW - Great link I'll check it out. I have not seen this.
