Cowboys and Indians on Oklahoma's Reformatory Road

Many precede and many will follow
A young girl's dream no longer hollow
It takes the shape of a place out west
But what it holds for her, she hasn't yet guessed
She needs wide open spaces...
--From the Dixie Chick's Wide Open Spaces

Yesterday, the kids and I headed west down I-40 toward El Reno, Oklahoma, to buy a puppy we saw advertised on Craig's List (1/2 Blue Heeler, 1/2 Australian Shepherd).
We met up with the owners on a small acreage on Reformatory Road.
The name is quite fitting since it borders the federal penitentiary.
I can't even tell you how very much this photo looks like the real Oklahoma.
I love it.

The Super Bridgy runs from the puppy.

Still running in the Oklahoma wind.

One of the great American classics: A Boy and His Dog.
It never gets old.

A Girl and Her Dog.

That title, in reality, may be even more compelling.

Just ask this little Okie!
My beautiful daughter, Juliette, the first to make me a mommy.
She begs to live in the country!
And, she begged me to buy her a puppy.
And, so, I bought two.
Because, I'm crazy.
P.S. We named the puppies Cowboy and Indian,
which is so much easier to say than Will Rogers and Sequoyah.

Hi Jen,

Your photos (and post) made me want to jump my car and take a road trip through the Oklahoma countryside. I am actually thinking of taking such a roadtrip this summer with an old friend of mine.

Your daughter, is indeed, a beauty--and I can see quite a bit of her mom in her!

Take care,

Melinda

@le - i'm so glad you said it was a good thing that I bought two, b/c I've been having nightmares.

@Territory Mom - Did you sleep last night? Me - not so much! The wind was fierce and I was seriously looking for trees crashing through the windows.

@Melinda - If you should roadtrip to Oklahoma you must let me know so I can treat you to a BBQ sandwich or something Okie like fried okra or ???

You got pupsters!!! I am so excited, for you & the kiddos! Cowboy & Indian-love the names-will bring such joy to your household. You are a dog person once again. Give them lots of belly rubs for me-the furkids not the other kids LOL. I just sent blessings thru the Universe for the pupsters since I cannot be there in person. I have asked that peace & love be breathed into their Spirits. BTW, I breath my Spirit into my furkids quite often. It really calms them.

I have not forgotten about your question regarding Spirit Animal Guides/Totems. I will be sending an e-mail answer, hopefully, this weekend. I had some research to do on Sully's particular Guide.

Happy Easter!! Hugs to all!

Blessed be...

Jen--

You had me LOLRO when I read your post. TWO puppies! How wonderful for the kids. I love the names -- Cowboy and Indian. If you had brought home a third one, you could have named him
Marshall Dillon. LOL

I can hardly wait for my "Missy" to meet them. (Myself also) Perhaps today.

The photos are great! You really captured the essence of childhood. Although you can't see it in the pictures -- all three wear the halos well. Angels -- All three.

Love you-- Mom

Love the photos of your kids! You are becoming quite the photo journalist. I love the pictures of Oklahoma and I LOVE "You're the reason God made Oklahoma". You are certainly an ambassador for Oklahoma, just like Frizell and West. Cowboy and Indian are a fitting addition to your family. I am sure they will give years of love and lessons for your kids.

The photos are SO GREAT!!!

Puppies!! I loved the pics and the Okie girl in my LUVS the song "You're the Reason God Made Oklahoma." Thanks for being the reason for one of my smiles today!

It is always wonderful visiting your blog Jen.
The photos are spectacular....I felt I was there with you all, running and cuddling the puppies.

I love the names you have given the dogs.....just perfect for that breed of dog.

Hope you are having a wonderful Easter.

Love the photos of the kids! I have to agree that you are becoming quite the photo journalist. I catch up with your blog on the weekends, cup of coffee in hand, and you always bring me to a new idea or thought...have I thanked you for that lately? :) I also love how you include lyrics or a bit of verse! Enjoy the new dog...there will never be a dull moment around your house again (if there ever was one, that is!)...

All I can say is thank God I live here now. If I wasn't and I read this post I would be so homesick!

This is a heart-warming-made-by-Easter post - one of my favorites yet. The song, of course, is brilliant and beloved and I can never hear it enough times - but we all know the full moon is over the North Canadian River not the Arkansas - which means its shining spot on OKC and not Tulsa!

The photography is stunning and that first photo is quintessential Oklahoma, wide open spaces of the prairie, a little barbed-wire, a whole lotta blue sky. Be still my heart!

And the motion shots are fantastic and your eye for composition and your ability to tell an entire story in one photos is brilliant, brilliant, brilliant!

There was even a brief moment of heart-in-my-throat drama in this post when I was grief-stricken at having to choose just one of those puppies. But I forgot for a moment how insanely brilliant you are - of course you got two. Its the absolute right thing to do for boy, girl and pack-loving dogs. Brava to you Jen. An inspiration time and time again in this post. And yes I am well aware of the over-use of the world brilliant - but I check the Thesaurus and it says Jen-X - a commonly used adjective for brilliant.

Oh my gosh, Jen, how I adored this post! And how I adore YOU, my friend! TWO puppies!?!?!? You are a little bit more insane than I am, because I was only tempted to get two puppies when we got Micah!

Cowboy and Indian are very lucky little pups to be adopted by such a great family! I can't wait to see more pictures!

Hugs,
Debbie

@Oklahoma Farmgirl - thank you for the prayers for the puppies!!

@MOM - Yes, halos!!

@BILLY @MELESSA - Thank you!! I love that song...

@PEG - The puppies act like their names!!! Cowboy has a swaggard, I swear. So funny.

@STEFUNK - i'm going to need it!

@BERLINAKAT - What a wonderful comment - to think I'm worthy of being read over a cup of can't-live-without-java. Thank you!!

jenX67 said...

@John Hayes - Thank you! When I took this picture I obviously saw the barb wire, but didn't really "see" it until I came home and reviewed the pics. It really says it all! There are actually people who collect barb wire - off subject, but you get me. =)

@TR - WOW!!!! I sat on the couch and read this comment to Robert! He said, "Wow, he's good!" Then, I said, "How do I respond to that? (Smiling big, of course.)" And, Robert said, "How 'bout THANK YOU!!!!" Then, he said, "TR would make a really good spy." LOL!!! (This, after telling him your latest stop on planet earth: San Miguel or ??) I asked him why, but you have to have a cup of coffee with me before I tell you his three reasons why. Three words.

So, speaking of brilliant (blush, blush) I bought two URLs and I can't wait to tell you what they are and see what you think.

@Debra - I'm scared. Hahahahahahaha!!!

My kids want a puppy too, but I don't think they would take care of the little puppy. I'm such a mean dad.
