Hey Jen, Yvonne and I drove our kids crazy this weekend quoting lines from the Hughes movies. Funny, nothing from the Breakfast Club seemed appropriate.
So let's see:

Great contest, Jen! I tweeted & FB'd the contest. Hope you get lots of hits!
Here's a funny thing that happened to me related to The Breakfast Club. I was teaching a communication class at OU and I wanted to show The Breakfast Club to my class. My class was on the first floor of Kaufmann hall and the video equipment that fed to all the classrooms in the building was on the third floor. So I left my class to go up and turn the video on. Well one of my clever fellow teaching assistants decided it would be funny to switch out my tape of The Breakfast Club with a porno. So I go upstairs and push the play button only to come back to my classroom to see the porno playing away.
One of life's most embarassing moments.

Great idea, Jen. I'm looking foward to seeing what other Gen Xers have to say.
It's so hard to pick a 'favorite' John Hughes movie... There were a lot of good ones! I'm torn between two in particular, though: National Lampoon's Vacation and Weird Science.
I actually watched Vacation about a month ago (right before I went on an 8-day trip with my wife, daughter and mother-in-law... Yes, 3 generations of women and ME!). I laughed throughout the movie and had several flashbacks to it during our own little adventure.
However, Weird Science really pulls me back to being a teenager. I distinctly remember sitting in the nice cool theatre on a Saturday afternoon to watch this movie. My buddy and I really had no idea what it was going to be about, but the poster with Kelly LeBrock on it was enough to entice us in (yeah... Teenage boys :) ).
By the time the movie ended, I was absolutely in love and was ready to strap a bra on my head in hopes of creating my own girl!
Hughes really did a good job of touching his audience... Of connecting with them. It wasn't all flash-bang special effects or ultra raunchy verbal assaults. You could 'feel' him in the movie. He will certainly be missed.
Cool contest idea, Jen.
I've tweeted and facebooked (new verb for the lexicon?)and plan to post on my blog ASAP!

I love them all, but Pretty in Pink was always my favorite. I absolutely wanted to be Molly Ringwald. I LOVED Duckie and the prom dress the great music. And Annie Potts was fantastic. Looking back now, the prom dress makes me laugh, but I still love the movie as much as I did back then.
(but I only have it on VHS, so I really need to win the DVD :P)
You really do make decisions hard. I guess The Breakfast Club may be my favorite followed by Pretty in Pink. Given that my kiddos are just getting into those preteen years this would be a great time to introduce them.
I also follow your blog religiously.
My favorite John Hughes movie is one that most people don't think of:
She's Having a Baby.
This movie came out about the time I found out my new wife was pregnant. It's like Mr. Hughes was following me around and writing about my life.
I even actually left my wife standing in the driveway the way Kevin Bacon's character did!
I think my favorite Hughes movie would have to be Sixteen Candles. I just loved Jake Ryan (who didn't?)! And I always identified with Molly Ringwald's Samantha. Never the "popular" girl in school it made me hope for more...
I did some extra credit, too. I have posted your link on Facebook. =o)

Hola X-Jen!
Breakfast club is iconic in my movie favorites. It reminds me of my best friend, Shelley.
One especially windy night, we drove around Lake Hefner after our play practice of "Our Town." We stood atop of the low wall along the North dam and extended our arms in "take off" position. The gale practically blew us back onto the street so we forcefully braced our bodies sharply into the wind, leaning dangerously over the boulders. The blasting wind caught scent of our anticipation of our future and levied us in a steady angled pose for a full 5 minutes. We were flying in the freedom of our last month of our senior year of high school. *magical* Everytime I bike around Lake Hefner I remember our flight together. Our flight into the future. She moved away 2 months later. I miss her.

My favorite is Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. I watch it every year around Thanksgiving and quote it often! "those aren't pillows!" is my favorite line from any movie.
I'm following the blog on facebook. I also posted a FB announcement.
Thanks!

Jen, In the breakfast club, I liked the way the good girl liked the bad boy. Rob
Breakfast Club is my favorite movie (besides Dirty Dancing and Slumdog). i used to want to be a brat pack member (they needed some color!)
I adore Pretty in Pink and 16 Candles...so classic!

Hey Jen.... Count me IN to your give-away contest.
My favorite of these movies was Breakfast Club. I remember that I loved the way the movie helped me break social barriers in my own mind. Then years later, I wanted to show this film to my high school students, and was shocked by how much 'language' there was in the film. Somehow I was immune to the language when I was in high school. I opted out of showing the film and looked for other ways to establish that 'teaching moment.'
The Breakfast Club was my fav for the longest time--love the music in it too. :) I love Pretty in Pink! I love all of his movies!! :)
Oh how can I NOT comment on the John Hughes give away. Ferris Bueller was and still is my fave of all the movies. I love the stupidity of it all - and the sheer genius of it all.
Lets see here:
I don't Tweet - strike 1 X
I barely keep up with my Face Book page but will mention something - strike two at this point X
I will definitely mention this on my blog - so 1 in my favor by tomorrow.
I usually don't enter blog give aways, but this is just TOOOOO much fun not too!
For the nostalgic, weepy high school momements :) it would have to be Pretty in Pink. For the real throwback times, Breakfast Club. I'm not sure I can pick between them- it would just depend on the day.
I have to say i enjoyed Pretty In Pink. I have not seen any of the movies in along time.

Would you think me lame if I fessed Home Alone? =)
thinking about hughes' contributions to my life this week (and the fact that he and i shared an employer and birth city--holla!) reminded me of the hours i spent with my beloved gen-x brother, bonding over the awkwardness, heartache, and ridiculousness of teen life. that brother's far away now, and what remains is a (very badly oxidized) copy of sixteen candles--though we were fans of all the films.
i am also struck by the low-gear speed in which many of the former brat packers now find their acting careers. this is not to take away from some excellent work they have done since (ally sheedy in "high art" and molly ringwald's turn in "chicago" among others), but they, like us, continue to teach us lessons about working with what life has dealt us, whether that's a recession, industry implosion, or other setbacks.
molly's now happy with twins (at 41) she never thought she'd have. while most people don't find breeding laudable or miraculous, she exemplifies a way an x-er can find happiness beyond the pitfalls that birth in a checkered era can bring.
hughes' genius was showing how even at our dorkiest, we can find ways to "win", and re-define "winning" at our lives in a way that makes others' approval just about irrelevant.
(post to fb and my own blog, as well)
Oooh, how do I even pick just one favorite John Hughes movie? I love, love, love Sixteen Candles. Jake Ryan -- swoon. But The Breakfast Club is pretty darn awesome, too. And I just saw Pretty in Pink playing outdoors in San Francisco's Dolores Park last week -- made even more fun by the group of men wearing sparkly pink prom dresses who were sitting in front of us :-)
I just added your blog to my google reader. Thanks for the giveaway chance!
Ferris Bueller, hands down.
The perfect girlfriend, the best friend with that car, the vendetta-driven principal, the horrible sister. I love it all!
er--to follow the rules: sixteen candles has to be my fave, but among the dvds in your selection, it would be breakfast club!
Seriously, I have to pick one? I guess Breakfast Club. But anything with Molly Ringwald will do :)
Here's my tweet: http://twitter.com/DiaperDiaries/status/3249693503
When I was little, as in 4th grade, I thought Pretty In Pink was just about the best movie, ever. When I was in high school, I discovered The Breakfast Club and made sure all my friends saw it (this was now the mid 90s, and not everyone knew about that movie). And, now, I still watch the original Home Alone every Thanksgiving weekend to get into the holiday spirit!
Hard to decide between 16 candles & Pretty in Pink - good memories there!
I tweeted this too!

I have to be a total sap and say the 1994 remake of Miracle on 34th Street. Mr. Hughes was the producer and wrote the screenplay. Oh, I'll make it worse and say I also love Mr. Mom.
Here's a more sophisticated twist - did you know that Mr. Hughes played Brian's father in The Breakfast Club?
