younger gen-xers turning 30 [excerpt from a new york times opinion editorial]

"...I’m part of the Peter Pan-ish Gen-X final trickle — and what do we know about growing up? My friends are all broke,

Thirtysomething (TV series)Image via Wikipedia

say “whatever” too much, still live in Converses and constant hangovers, still yell at their parents on the phone and two seconds later ask for money and possibly a place to crash, are still deferring college loans and say everything is the new something-else, including the 30s, which are the new 20s. The economy is in crisis, and they don’t care; they have become Zen about debt, having been impoverished, if trust-fund-less, since they got out of college at the beginning of the millennium, a time of tragedy and war and turmoil, their entire 20s devoured...

"And this is the very no-man’s-land paralysis that “Thirtysomething” was obsessed with, that cold-sweat-panic moment when youthful rebellion runs headlong into the responsibilities, pains and joys of full-blown adulthood."

My girls are 21 and 24 and that quote describes them to a tee. Not gen-xers but oh so close! I think it just takes that decade to find your way. We found our way, generations before us found theirs. The think is, their way might turn out differently but it will be theirs to own. I am happy that I did my part to influence them in some way and now I can let go and let them be the 20 somethings that they are without feeling responsible. It's a relief! Not that I don't worry, I do...when I'm not reading my book or taking a trip! :):) just kidding!

Oh man, thanks Jen! This post makes me realize how old I am in the X-gen generation. The young thirty-somethings hardly recognize the tv series "Thirty-something." They might have been attending junior hi or hi school at the time. I can reflect upon the indifference this way, if I am one of the oldest, I have the undisputed power to authorize myself as an expert (like you) on our X-gen generation. Afterall, my birthday is Friday. ; )

Have a sunshine-y day in your heart!
