[excerpt] gen x nurse

This post is anonymous. As best I can tell, it's not even linked to a specific blog. I left a note for the author asking to republish it as a guest post, but I didn't hear back from her. I think it is just terrific, and honestly, I have never come across anything about Generation X and nurses. I come across quite a bit about Generation X and librarians and even Gen X doctors, but this is a first for nursing. Here is an excerpt:

"I'm a Gen X nurse. What does that mean? In the most obvious sense it just means that I was born in 1970 and I'm a registered nurse. I try not to put too much stock in all of the generational stereotypes, but I have always felt like I was Generation X to the core...When I graduated from college in 1992, I had a liberal arts degree...So I got a job in a bakery...I did this for 10 years...And then September 11th happened...I made the decision to start nursing school...

"Sometimes it takes a tragedy to make you see what's really important...Sure I could pay my dues and work for a company, sell things, market things, design things, manage things, get promoted. But nursing is different. It's so much more simpler: What does a nurse do? She takes care of people when they are sick. And gets paid for it..."

the comment really strikes the basic premise of any job. The job description is the same - the occupant of the job is the one who is different. Each one of us have different experiences that have impacted us. Thus the response is different for every person regardless of a generational label.

@GEORGIE - Yes, you're Gen X. Undisputed - 1965-78. The broadest definition - 1961-81. Welcome to the hood! LOL!

@KENT - Yes, that is true. What I found to be most identifiable with the Gen X persona was getting in a liberal arts degree and then working in a bakery and as a waitress for 10 years. Very Reality Bites...I really appreciate your commetns and visits to my blog, kent!

Thanks for the compliment - and the link! My name is Beth Anderson and I've been blogging about nursing since 2005.

It's funny. I've come to the conclusion that being a nurse is the perfect profession for a Gen Xer and yet at work I feel kind of crowded out by the millenials and the boomers.

Love your blog, BTW - great Judy Blume reference!

@BETH - Thanks for visiting my blog! I loved your blog post. It was just so great. There are so many aspects from which to come at Gen X, and this was a really unique one - not one I've ever come across. You got the Judy Blume reference - not everyone does! Thank you!
