From the
New York Time Review of Michael Chabon's
Manhood For Amateurs
The Pleasures and Regrets of a Husband, Father, and Son
"...The self-portrait he draws is that of a domesticated Gen X male, competent in the kitchen and devoted to sharing child-rearing duties with his wife, and at the same time a guy who believes that 'the business of being a man' involves giving 'the appearance of competence' and a fair amount of 'faking it.'"
Chabon was born in 1963 and considered one of the most celebrated Gen X writers. In 2001, he won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction with The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay. Chabon's work includes the usual Gen X suspects of nostalgia, divorce, abandonment and like this latest work, fatherhood.
I think this is the perfect Christmas or Hanukkah (Chabon's Jewish and many of his works reflect Jewish characters) present for the Gen X male on your list.

I think that this may have carried over into Gen Y as well... I am on the relative cusp of the generations and I fit the description in your post to a T. I am THE cook in our house (bake too!, just ask Sarah about the pumpkin cheesecake she took to work) and I also do a lot of sharing of child rearing duties with Sarah. In regards to the cooking specifically, I LOVE IT. I don't love it just for the end result, but the act of cooking is fun (and a stress reliever). Gone are the days when women dominated the kitchen and it was considered feminine to know how to cook. Heck I bet half the reason I won Sarah over was because I could cook! Today's "foodie" scene is increasing populated by Men of all ages and generations. Just look on TV... Emeril, Alton Brown (my hero), 4/5 Iron Chefs, etc...
@THEMUFFIN MAN - Great comment. Loved it! It's so true!! And, I'm the only one who finds the word foodie hysterical? I loved your comment from the other dya, too. I tried to email you, but only have hte mercury address! I hope you see this!
