This is a video of the cartoon Aquaman, which I'm sure plenty of Gen X boys loved, but which I absolutely dreaded watching as kid. It always came on after Superman and before Scooby Doo. It was a decidedly boy cartoon and as such I had about as much use for it as I did my Ken doll, who, by the way, Aquaman resembled.
The cartoon debuted in 1967, the year I was born, and new episodes ran until 1970. In this episode Aquaman rides a whale and conquers the evil of the rampaging reptile men.
I always kind of felt sorry for Aquaman. He lived in the shadows of Batman and Superman. It was probably his orange shirt and green tights - totally inappropriate color scheme for a superhero. Also, I never knew a manly-man to ride a seahorse. Hahahaha!
Did you know that Sponge Bob does a parody of Aquaman? He's called Mermaid Man. He lives in a nursing home and falls asleep while fighting crime. He even wears an orange shirt and green tights. Hilarious!

Poor Aquaman. My boys still catch episodes of that show!
@BALONEY - LOL! "Poor Aquaman." Really. And, poor Ken, too. I can't believe episodes of that are still playing. Do you have a Dish hanging off your front porch? JUST KIDDING!!!! =)
I actually like Aquaman. He and Superman were the only Superfriends who could go underwater. I thought he was cool. Guess I was more of a tomboy than I thought.
That first Mermaid Man episode of SpongeBob was the first time I really enjoyed SpongeBob Squarepants.
In the intro to a comic book I read once, the two authors said they flipped a coin and the loser had to write the Aquaman scene -- "OK, Aquaman, we'll try to stop the satellite from crashing and you...check out the harbor?"
But I also loved the underwater gig myself...
That's the old Aquaman. The new one is manly and has a beard. He's also not so nice. He attacked the "surface dwellers" a few times. I actually like him better than the old one.
@CARLA SHORE - Since writing this post I've developed a crush on Aquaman. He's a total metrosexual. =)
@FRIAR - That is so funny. Thank you for sharing. Aquaman has long suffered image problems, I guess. Haha!
@MELESSA - Yeah, SB is a real trip. The Mermaid Man stuff does make it more tolerable. Did you hear that the man who was the voice of Sponge Bob and Patrick died recently? Sad.
@DADDY FOREVER - I had no idea there was a NEW Aquaman. I wonder if that's what @BALONEY is referring to her boys watching??
