1971: the homecoming, a christmas story

The one thing I really didn't like about The Walton's was that Grandma and Grandpa always bickered at each other. Remember her nickname for him, Old Man? There were other things I didn't like, too, but I still
watched the TV series faithfully throughout my entire Generation X childhood.

The Homecoming: A Christmas StoryThe Waltons aired from 1972-81, but none of the episodes were as good as the original made-for-TV movie, which kicked-off the series. It was called The Homecoming: A Christmas Story and it aired in 1971 and starred Patricia Neal in the part of Ma.

One thing I did like about The Waltons was that it represented for me that time in the world during which both my parents came of age - The Great Depression and World War II. My father didn't like The Waltons and he often said it made him sad to watch it. He had terrible memories of The Depression including his father giving him away to a farm when he was eight years old. His mother, who had already suffered the loss of one son she was forced to abandon, went back and got him and nobody starved.

Enjoy your Wednesday After School Special, Gen X. This is a clip from the The Homecoming: A Christmas Story. The first 30 seconds is the best part.

Jen, I never watched the Walton's, but from the clip it looks like a nice family show. Although, did Paw live in West Virginia and work New York City. He took two buses and still had to hitch hike 6 miles? Was Paw secretly a New York Investment Banker?

Jen, I have this movie and your are right. It is far better than the series. I still tear-up when John Boy gets a stack of writing paper and was over the moon happy with it.

Everyone is scrambling for just the right gift. I'm for getting back to just giving ONE or TWO presents at Christmas. The entire thing is OUT OF CONTROL...

Love you! Happy Birthday TO ME! ;) ahhahaha

@ANONYMOUS - Only my husband Robert would write this. You must know him. Hey, you are him! =)

@REBECCA - I agree - one or two gifts. Robert and I opted for one gift each this year. I'm very happy with what I'm getting. =) Now, the kids, they're another story.

@TERRITORY MOM - You don't have to ask me if it's OK! You have something to contribute about this movie. I can't wait to read it. Write away! I'll link back. You are sooooo perfect to commentate about this movie. It's a great fit for your blog and I wouldn't at all be offended. I did love Patricia Neal in the role of Ma!
