The one thing I really didn’t like about The Walton’s was that Grandma and Grandpa always bickered at each other. Remember her nickname for him, Old Man? There were other things I didn’t like, too, but I still watched the TV series faithfully throughout my entire Generation X childhood.
The Homecoming: A Christmas Story
The Waltons aired from 1972-81, but none of the episodes were as good as the original made-for-TV movie, which kicked-off the series. It was called The Homecoming: A Christmas Story and it aired in 1971 and starred Patricia Neal in the part of Ma.
One thing I did like about The Waltons was that it represented for me that time in the world during which both my parents came of age – The Great Depression and World War II. My father didn’t like The Waltons and he often said it made him sad to watch it. He had terrible memories of The Depression including his father giving him away to a farm when he was eight years old. His mother, who had already suffered the loss of one son she was forced to abandon, went back and got him and nobody starved.
