KMGL (104.1 in Oklahoma City) has kept me in Christmas tunes since before Thanksgiving. The other day, the DJs were talking about a recipe posted on the station’s Web site for strawberry pretzel salad. I’d never heard of anything like it, but I thought it sounded Chrismassy and so I decided to try it.

Strawberry Pretzel Salad
This dish is so good! It’s very rich, and my kids and husband loved it. My pictures aren’t the greatest, and I forgot to photograph it before we cut into it and messed it all up. This was a fun addition to our annual Christmas dinner, which we celebrated tonight. It’s a very cold dish, and might be really good in summer, but I’m always looking for ways to distinguish Christmas dinner from Thanksgiving dinner. Strawberry pretzel salad is a great way!

Gina’s Sensational Strawberry Pretzel Salad
Ingredients
2 cups crushed pretzels
3 tbs. sugar
3/4 cup melted butter
8 oz. cream cheese softened
3/4 cup sugar
8 oz. cool whip
1 6 oz pkg. strawberry jello
1 1/2 cup boiling water
2 10oz. pkgs. frozen strawberries (If you cannot find 10 oz. pkgs. I buy 1 16 oz. pkg. and that is plenty)
Directions
Mix crushed pretzels, 3 tbs. sugar, and 3/4 cup melted butter in a bowl. Press into a 9 X 13” baking dish. Bake at 400 degrees for 7 minutes. Combine softened cream cheese, 3/4 cup sugar, and cool whip in a bowl. Mix until smooth. Spread mixture over the baked pretzels. Dissolve jello in 1 1/2 cups boiling water and stir in the frozen strawberries. (If the strawberries are whole I cut them in half) Poor over the cream cheese layer and chill in the refrigerator until set.

I think Americans are the kings of make a food that is already made into something – ie the pretzel in this case – into something else completely different !!
