In her eight-year career, Erica Warren has worked in four industries, at seven jobs, and been laid off three times, most recently in June 2009. In spite of all of that, this resilient Atlanta Generation Xer is not afraid.
A Stimulus Package to Combat Hopelessness
Warren has embraced her recent layoff by creating a mental stimulus package to combat hopelessness and in these uncertain times. She wrote and self-published her first book, The Creator in You: You are not Helpless to remind others of the power we have even in challenging times. Against the odds and despite the current climate Warren is certain that her future is not in the economy’s hands.
According to Warren, change and uncertainty are reflective of Generation X. Moreover, based on the fact Gen X is historically less committed to one employer and more willing to switch jobs to get ahead, Warren says she’s not been paralyzed by turbulent economic times. Instead, she’s turned her energies to helping empower others to overcome them.
Embracing the motto of her alma mater, I’ll find a way or make one, Erica says, “The power to create what we need is inside of us, only we are too dependent on external things to realize it. My book is about reminding us that we exist for a reason, to create what only we were designed to offer and the only thing that can stop us is ourselves.”
Way to Go Erica is right on! I read the intro and am going to order the book.
I’ve been very fortunate in that I’ve never been laid off but I’ve been on both sides of buyouts several times and reorged a bunch. I’ve seen what happens to people who make their job their identity. When they lose their job its like they cease to exist.
Some of them are still pining away for what they had 20 years ago. Not happening!
Gen Xers can definitely show Boomers how to tuck and roll when adversity hits and then stand up and keep on going.
I love Erica’s motto. Thanks for sharing.
Sounds like a read we could all use to get our hands on these days, Gen X or otherwise. Thanks for putting this in front of us, Jen.
great sentiments Jen and what a way forward when all roads seem dead end – faith in ones self … best le
