And the rocket's red glare
The bombs bursting in air
Gave proof through the night
That our flag was still there...
Maybe it's a writer thing, but clichés make me a little sick to my stomach. Worn out metaphors are to a writer what donuts are to a model: lethal-and-leading-to-failure.
Today, while fighting off the effects of the flu, I unwittingly subjected myself to an NPR story about Sarah Palin. Her ridiculous soundbite, "...how's that hopey-changey stuff workin' for ya?" is a catchy derivative of a question made popular by Oprah Winfrey.
The question was originally intended as a kind of check point for the legions of embattled souls Oprah and her protege, Dr. Phil, routinely engaged. It was a light-hearted ice-breaker, intended to sift denial and raise awareness of the causes and effects of self-induced misery. It was clever and memorable and even funny - for awhile. But, like so many phrases, it's no longer any of those things. In fact, it's gone the path of d'oh!, yeah, baby, yeah!, and "Mmmmyeahhh." Enough already.
But, Sarah Palin, who wants to be President, is cool, she uses it.
Heaven help us.
It isn't enough that Palin is a weird amalgam of Pam Ewing, Fran Fine and Maggie O'Connell, she is now parodying Oprah and Dr. Phil. In her, I find no trace of the heroism of Harriet Tubman; the conviction of Deborah Sampson Gannett; the intelligence of Sandra Day O'Connor or the knowledge of Doris Kearns Goodwin. But, I'm sure eventually she'll make us an offer we can't refuse.
Is this the best the Republican Party has to offer? A candidate for Commander-in-Chief who is a metaphor for every lipstick shade I've ever worn? Pink Crush. Raspberry Glace. Mocha Blast. She is her elocution and as such nothing more than a strawberry-flavored Bonnie Bell Lip Smacker. I can taste something, but there's nothing there to digest. In fact, it's an inedible wickless candle, and with her, no proof through the night.

Amen. Well said.
This echoes the thoughts that run through my head late at night, but comes out in such a more funny, eloquent, and snazzy way. I'm hoping this is the beginning of a much better week for you!
Jen - go see PT latest post - you'll love it - my comment keeps dropping out - but it one of my fav - hits on some good points ..
Hope you are feeling better soon matey le xox
Right on, Jen!
God help us, the amount of "Christian as political identity" in her scares the crap out of me. The GOP using "Christian as political identity" means not that one goes to Church, is a disciple of Jesus, or a follower of the Way, but a stance on political issues that bear little resemblance to the good news of God in Christ. Andrew Sullivan best describes this phenomenon as Christianist and Christianism. It bears little resemblance to the GOP that Gen X remembers in the 1980s.
You combine that with her educational record and I think that there are a lot of us that are literally smarter than her. These are scary times.
THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! And Amen!
Jen had her Wheaties this morning!
This is a great post! She annoys me, too. If she is the best that Conservatives can do for the next election then we're in trouble.
I just heard that quote this morning on the news. She is such a complete dip, and I don't understand why people like her. My husband, who is very Republican, changed his vote to Democrat for the first time ever during the last Presidential election because of her. I assumed everyone else would too because of the obvious stupid factor. I assumed wrong. I guess the Okies got confused by the shine of the Bonnie Bell Lip Smacker.
Great Post. I don't get her at all, or what people see in her. Could she really get to be president, is that possible?
Great post Jen. I've just read a story on her in our local paper in Brisbane, Australia. The quote about brushing up on foreign policy now she has the time was frightening. Surely she should have done that a few years ago.
So you don't like Sarah's "Hopey Changey" comment. You don't understand what so many people see in her.
Well... Just maybe that is your problem and not theirs. You also probably thought Ronald Reagan was just a two bit actor didn't ya?
Obama told you that, "We are the ones we've been waiting for" and you believed him. Well, here is a news flash for you.
The people have now seen who you've been waiting for and they don't like what they see.
Sarah is only saying what they, the people, believe already.
You betcha!
@Visavis101 - You're right. I didn't like Ronald Reagan. He was a terrible actor, but much better than Palin. Make no mistake, I know exactly what people see in her.
Jen:
So you know exactly what people see in Sarah Palin. Please enlighten the rest of us.
I have lived in the in the liberal San Francisco Bay Area all my 62 years except when I was away for 4 1/2 years serving in the USAF during the during the Vietnam war era of our history.
I have always made my own decisions and walked my own path.
I have even walked on the eastern side of the Berline wall(1971), when there still was a wall. I have spoken with East Germans in their own language and left them knowing I had been a good ambassador of the west and individual freedom. I also left them knowing they did not have the freedoms I had.
I have owned my own small/micro business for the last 35 years and I have often told others that owning my own business is not easier... it is just better.
Perhaps I can explan whatI mean better by saying it this way...
There was a movie called, "Born Free," that was made in 1966, the year I graduated from high school. It was about a orphan female lion cub that found and raised to adulthood by a couple. There finally came a day they were forced to make the decision of either return the young lionist to the wild or send her to a zoo.
They knew she would be safe and taken care in the zoo but, they decided to release her into the wild knowing that she might starve or be killed. They release her into the wild because they knew that while she might not be safe of survive in the wild she would be free, free as she was born to be however long or short she may live.
Ergo.. the meaning of the story for me was Freedom does not mean life will be easier or safer it is just somehow better.
Patrick Henry said it this way, " Give me liberty or give me Death."
Sadly I find to many liberals would rather be red than dead. Or said another way, would trade their freedoms in hopes of being taken care of from womb to tomb.
So again I say..... I have lived 62 years and have my fair share of experiences, more than many I suppose... I know what I see in Sarah but, I am interested to know what you think it is that you think it is that I and other see in Sarah since you say you know and apparently don't like.
@BOB - Thank you for your comment. I read every word and appreciate where you're coming from. I think what people see in Sarah Palin is a telegenic rock star - someone who has the ability to make headlines and keep their story on the front page. This, however, does not make her a leader, but merely a circus act, capable of P.T. Barnum-style publicity. For the record, I lean liberal, I am a registered Democrat, but many of my religious convictions keep me from voting a straight ticket.
Jen,
The first day that McCain announced Palin as running mate, I was elated because of her enthusiasm. But not a day later, I began to understand what you've briefly stated. This is how I read your post: She's a walking talking cliche. I think I have to agree. Although I can still understand what it is about her that appeals.
Amen, sister. I have such a problem with Palin. As a mother of a special needs child I thought she was going to help, then I realized why isn't she at home. I was jealous because I can not leave home, but thankful I realized I mean God showed me that my season will come. I don't think she really gets it.
This is a well thought out and well written post, I enjoyed reading it. But....
I find your take on Sarah Palin fairly one sided. She was good enough to be Governor, she battled to be economically and fiscally responsible. She may not sound or be like a typical Politician but, maybe that is just what this country needs. An off the beltway person to inject some common sense and pride back into America. Now, I am not necessarily supporting her. However, I do support the cause she seems to represent. REAL PEOPLE IN THE Political System! Remember the Average American is not always the most eloquent of speakers, that should not discount their ideas. Rather than the quid-pro-quo good ole boy Politicians we have had for 40 years or more.

BTW: I have Lost the Hope, and the only Change I have is in my piggy bank(for now).
Great post, Jen. Interestingly, a recent poll indicates that 71% of voters find Palin unfit to be Commander-in-Chief; but that other 28% will continue to be mighty loud.
The comment by "Bob" reminds me of a recent conversation about the root cause of why people vote against their own interests; the American Dream being one big culprit. Primarily, the thought that we can all reach that lofty goal whatever we believe it to be. But, sadly, we all won’t be received at Graceland.
And who’s to blame? The big bad government, with its steel boot firmly on the throat of every freedom-loving, rugged individualist and "real" American. Once you manage to sell that meme–-with some anti-intellectualism thrown in for good measure–-you’ve got yourself a bunch of disenchanted folks sidling up with their worst enemies, who masquerading as allies pretend to be one with those folks who they have not only the utmost contempt for, but whom they need to continue the flourishing of their own selfish interests.
That's who Sarah Palin speaks to.
Jen, Jen, Jen…
Where to begin with you. You say, “a telegenic rock star - someone who has the ability to make headlines and keep their story on the front page. … not a leader, but merely a circus act, capable of P.T. Barnum-style publicity.”
Really now… “A rock star” Yet Sarah attracts more mid-life adults and young seniors (hmm that clearly is a oxymoron lol) like myself than young people. Do you really believe these are the type of people that easily get caught up in frenzy by a rock star or a P.T. Barnum-style circus act?
I’m sorry but I would have to differ with you here. No, I think these are the type people that respond to someone that put voice to their frustrations and what they are already thinking.
If there is a P.T Barnu-style circus going on it’s the elite liberal media with their lies by omissions, misframed shots and their, "there is sucker born every minute" elitist attitude that makes it so… not Sarah.
Sarah has proven herself to be a leader or she would have never been able to become a mayor or a govenor of the state of Alaska. Sarah actually has more executive leadership experience than Obama ever did, rather you wish to believe or not.
On a different subject, here is a youtube music video you might like or find interesting.

@JOHN and VisaVis101 - I think @KIKO says it best - SEVENTY ONE (71%) percent of Americans think she is incapable of being president. This poll was released yesterday. You may disagree with me, but I am in the majority. Nearly 3/4 of Americans do not think this flash-in-the-pan can lead. This is not a partisan issue for me. I'm a huge fan of many Republican women, starting with Sandra Day O'Connor.
@TERRITORY MOM - She's like so many politicans - male and female alike - who use their families as props. Walking off the bus with her baby on her hip. It was so contrived.
Remember Jen that Clinton was elected with less than 50% of the vote.
And 90% of statistics can be made to say what you want them to 75% of the time.
Polls are always misleading, They ask and phrase the questions to suit their needs at the time.
All polls are skewed that is why they always say + or - 5%-10%, they believe by telling you this that you will believe them more readily.
If I were to get a list of liberal democrats and call everyone of them. I would likely get the answers as expected and wanted. Most of the polls are done this way intentionally. Same with Republicans.
What they claim is they called so many registered voters, they do not tell you which party they support and which ones were called to get the stats.
The only Polls that matter are on voting day.
As I said earlier I am not necessarily for Palin I am for the Ideas she represents. Freedom , True Democracy, and Common Sense.
I'm sorry but any poll with a +/- margain of 5-10% is a joke.
Sarah Palin represents Sarah Palin and nothing more.
Wait, I take that back--she represents division (those who disagree w/her are not "real" Americans; she and her husband have secessionist ties), quitters, hypocrisy, hucksterism, and a rejection of science and intellect.
As for real people in government, I'm all for it. But real and intelligent should not mutually exclusive terms. Furthermore, I'd like my leaders to be smarter than me; what kind of ignorant, narcissistic fools have we become, when we evaluate our leaders based on our desire to have a beer with them?
Btw, aside from the tired cliche of calling anyone who isn't Fox the "liberal media elite", some people might want to rethink using "elite" as an epithet, since the dictionary describes it as "selected as the best". Just sayin'.
One day, in this life or the next, John McCain will have to answer for unleashing The Quitta from Wasilla on us.
Kiko, you stated my entire point flawlessly!
All poll are nothing than a cruel joke played upon the society!
Nuff Said!
