I loved the Little Rascals as a kid and I swear I wanted to be Darla. Didn’t every little girl? My favorite song that Darla sang was The Love Bug’ll Get Ya (If You Don’t Watch Out). Unfortunately, I can’t locate a clip on YouTube featuring this episode. Do you recall a favorite song she sang?
Darla was a member of the Silent Generation, my parents’ generation. She was born in 1931, and sadly died suddenly at the age of 47. Lots of Gen Xers, my brother and me included, grew watching old episodes of the Little Rascals. As I recall, Billy really liked the episode featuring Ms. McGillicutty, the Little Rascals’ first teacher.
Here is a picture of Darla as a young mother with her own daughter. Just beautiful! The resemblance is uncanny.
Before it was MARSH! MARSHA! MARSHA!… it was DARLA! DARLA! DARLA! What an adorable child. I didn’t know she died at only 47… how sad. The Little Rascals was a repackaged offering of the original OUR GANG, and I spent countless hours in front of our little TV that sat on an aluminum TV TRAY (!) watching episode after episode with you. They always remind me of Nicky Ducato (RIP) too. They were unparralelled for the time and hold up well today. Poor Darla and Alfalfa died young. “Only the good…”
Hey Jen–I haven’t stopped by for a long time (shame on me). Life gets busy. I did love ‘The Little Rascals’ — and of course, I did want to be Darla. Thanks for the reminder!
Melinda
