Update:
Here's another account of turning 40 from another dear friend, TR, an Xer who turned 40 in 2001. This is a great piece of writing!
Generation X, according to Neil Howe and the late William Strauss, begins at 1961 and ends at 1981. Depending on an individual's experience, you can add or subtract a year or two at either end of the spectrum.

Ohhh, your great post made me go back and look at what I wrote on the day I turned 40. There is a bit of wincing and cringing - but if there was every any question that 1961 is Generation X - I think I answered that with a very Gen-X view of life in 2001. Long before I even knew what the term meant: http://www.trryan.com/2001/08/postcard-from-border-passing-into-40.html
@TR - I went and read your post. I want to read it again. I will update my post to include your link. These milestones deserve celebration and reflection. I'm always three years behind. Like I was telling you that day at the park - my big party will come at 43. 23 was also a big milestone for me. ???
Jen...Every day I thank God for my breath. I no longer care about my age. My next one to end in zero, 9 years away, will be #60...how can that be?
Now sister...I'm waiting anxiously for you to write about the infamous Ms. Hunter. Did you see her interview with the Big O yesterday? I'm ashamed I watched it. A total waste of my God-given, can't get 'em back hours.
Please share your thoughts, talented sister. They are ALWAYS spot on!
Love you~B
Can you believe I didn't blog on the day I turned 40 last week! I kind of went through my crap and confusion the year and a half prior, and was truly at peace when I hit the big four-OH! It was like any other birthday for me. Went for a night out with my bride, and for a few drinks with the guys.
I wonder if I'll feel remorse years down the road for not celebrating more? Oh well.. I guess I can always do it up big when I hit the half century mark!!
