Every once in a while, you come across a blog post that is so well-researched and so deliverable, you just gotta post a link to it on your blog. This is one of those posts. It's written by Kelli Marshall, a visiting assistant professor of film at the University of Toledo. Her blog is Unmuzzled Thoughts and in her latest post, 80s Remakes: Will Gen X Buy It?, she asks if Gen X is mad at Hollywood. She goes on to list a variety of rants from Gen Xers regarding Hollywood remakes. Here's my favorite:
Gag me with your 80s Movies Remakes: Hollywood, you figure there’s a built-in audience hungry for some nostalgia. But there’s also a built-in audience ready to riot if you mess with their fondest childhood memories.Marshall explains that Hollywood is remaking all these favorite Gen X films to appeal to nostalgic parents and their progeny, but it seems they've missed the mark. Marshall says this is scary given Hollywood's investment. Her post features the budgets of several recent remakes along with the following list of those in the works:
I guess they don't know how skeptical Gen Xers can be or how much we value the authentic. Oh, well. I'm probably going to see The Smurfs anyway. But, you know what will make me feel ancient? When someone remakes Roots or Friends. I really hope nobody tries to remake the Love Boat. I'd have to watch it and that would be sad. Ha!
The Karate Kid
Tron
Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps
Meatballs
Oh, God
Magnum PI
Arthur
Footloose
The A-Team
21 Jump Street
Laverne and Shirley
Poltergeist
The Smurfs
Overboard
Clue
Romancing the Stone
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Masters of the Universe

Thanks for the mention! And glad you found the post engaging. =)
I'm embarrassed to admit that I want to see the A-Team movie.
The Dukes Of Hazzard movie was a disappointment though.
I say remake the bad ones. Leave the Karate kid alone. If they want to remake some old movie do it better than the version that bombed!! Have the redone Gone with the Wind?? Did they redo To Kill a Mockingbird?? no! But to redo "Wax On Wax Off" That is just too much.
And as far as I'm concerned "Footloose" is sacrid.
Honestly I think Hollywood does the hits and the beloved ones because they are too lazy to come up with new material. And what new they come up with is potty humor. I'm sick of seeing Adam Sandler do stupid low-brow movies. Mike Myers what has he done for me lately, the Love Guru?? Okay he did Shrek and Austin Powers. Even Eddie Murphy has grown up... well there was Norbert.
And a confession... I would like to see the A-Team too. but only for Bradley Cooper. He's the new Brad Pitt.
Oh and Masters of the Universe... Totally. I. Would. Watch. It.
Another example of screwed up remakes... the brady bunch movie. What a waste of time and resources.
They are remaking Red Dawn also! http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1234719/
GenX falls in love with the original. We know 100% without a shadow of a doubt that we are committed to our original choice and that it doesn't get any better than that. Rob.
I so hate remakes. I don't think I have ever seen a decent one. Maybe War of The Worlds. It was scary even though I knew the outcome. Hollywood is so bankrupt on creativity that it stinketh.
Some of these I would consider seeing:
The Karate Kid (even though it should be called The Kung Fu Kid)
Tron
Meatballs
The A-Team
21 Jump Street (especially if Johnny Depp does a cameo, which is highly unlikely)
The Smurfs (with my daughter)
Maybe:
Laverne and Shirley (will Penny Marshall be directing?)
Poltergeist
The rest probably not.
