Oh--she takes care of herself
She can wait if she wants
She's ahead of her time
Oh--and she never gives outAnd she never gives in
She just changes her mind
--From Joel and She's Always a Woman
I've been reading the book, Wander Woman, by Marcia Reynolds. It's a new book about how high-achieving women - you know the ones who land big jobs only to become quickly disenchanted and full of wanderlust - can find contentment and direction. It's a practical book, and I plan to write a full review as soon as I finish reading it. (I like it so much I've already become a Wander Woman Facebook fan.)
What I wanted to go ahead and pass along today is a link to the Bem Sex Role Inventory, Reynolds writes about in the book's second chapter. The BSRI was developed in 1971 by Dr. Sandra Lipsitz Bem. It characterizes one's personality as masculine, feminine, androgynous, or undifferentiated. The BSRI is based on gender stereotypes, so what it's actually measuring is how well individuals fit into traditional sex roles. Thus, a score may say as much about how our cultural expectations have changed over the last 35 years as it does about one's personality.
Based on Reynolds research of Generation X women, they are not becoming more like men; they are becoming stronger women. Do do you buy this? My test results validate that I have equally feminine and masculine personality traits.
On Sunday, The Washington Post reported that a prominent woman used Spanish vulgarity to express her
opinion about the President. She said a female governor had the male body parts the President did not have, which were necessary to accomplish a feat.
It's hard for me to imagine that someone who has risen so high in national prominence can stoop so low. When a woman attempts to grab power or wield influence by emasculating a man, it is not femininity she has abandoned, it's self respect. Something tells me she didn't memorize the Girl Scout law and promise.
Based on all the secondary research I have done about Generation X over the last two years, I would guess that if Generation X women are developing more masculine traits while maintaining feminine characteristics, Generation X men are exhibiting more feminine personality traits while hoping to hold fast to masculine characteristics. As explained above, cultural expectations have changed.
How do you think this shift will impact families, marriages, careers and/or health?

Jennifer,
First of all, I always enjoy your blog. I took the quiz linked in your post. It seems like my ratings are useless without a scale to compare my results with others. I would also like to see an interpretive analysis based on my results. Exactly how feminiminime ; ) am I compared to other women? How masculine am I compared to others? How androgynous am I? What does it mean in society? In my relationships?
Furthermore, how does Ms. Bem use the findings? Are the results used to locate occupational fields which are suited to the individual? I am curious if you have more info.
Thank you, beautiful!
Lori
I remember hearing that song just recently and it made me think of my wife. Because no matter what she is always a woman to me. And the best woman ever. Rob
I scored off the chart masculine. But I'm still a JenX man at heart.
I like this one a lot! Particularly leaving out certain names : ) It's certainly interesting trying to figure out the "right" amount of girlyness in engineeringland... According to the test, I'm 2/3 man, 2/3 woman, 2/3 neutral... so I'm two people!
Interesting, & always thought provoking. I was 66%+ masculine, 66%+ androgynous, & 76%+ feminine. Probably just about right LOL But I, too, would like to know exactly what all that means.
Thanks for making me think early in the morning. I am sure this will influence my dealings with others. Because, as you know, I incorporate everything into becoming more "me".
Love you dear girl!! Have a lovely, lovely day.
~~blessed be...
Apparently, I'm 80 percent feminine. What the heck does that mean, though? Love the concept of dating myself back to some 70's Boomer's idea of appropriate gender-bending-typing. ;) Hope all is well out there. xo, Naomi
Problem is Palin is right!
Thought you may want to see this Jen. They claim OKC is the 5th worst city to live in.
5. Oklahoma City, Okla.
Population: 560,332
Oklahoma City is the unhealthiest city in the country, as measured by the American College of Sports Medicine's annual fitness index. The index looks at 30 fitness indicators, including obesity and exercise rates, death rate from cardiovascular disease, acres of park land, number of primary care physicians per capita and percentage of residents who bicycle or walk to work.
The index compares the 50 largest metro areas on a 100-point scale; Oklahoma City received a score of 24.3, making it the most sluggish city in the U.S. The obesity rate is 30.2%, four points above average. It has an exercise rate of 71% and has half as many baseball diamonds, recreation centers and dog parks as most cities. Detroit and Las Vegas also performed poorly on the fitness index.

Scored over 90 on the masculine side about 60 on feminine side.
Guess, I am a male. I best get used to it. A tough thing to do but, being a male for 46 years does make it easier :)

@JOHN - thanks for the link. Unfortunately, it doesn't suprise me. =( Palin is as deep as coconut cream pie. =) Flakey, too. Ha!
@LOFO - you ask the best questions. You're so smart!! I agree - what does it all mean?
@ROB - Thank you!
@OKLAHOMA GIRL - our scores are similar!
@LAURA - Or three people! Strange inventory, huh?
@NAOMI - That is awesome. I love it. I often think I'm becoming more Boomer in middle age. Girl, how are you? I've missed chatting.
