Strawberry Terror

Ruben Navarette of the San Francisco Chronicle has written an opinion piece about immigration. While I have no desire to go anywhere near that debate on this blog, I did find his statements about Generations X and Y and their inability to perform dirty jobs like farming rather interesting. Here's an excerpt:

But were they to attempt any of it, most members of Generation Y wouldn't last an hour. As a member of Generation X, I'm part of a heartier crew. So I can say that, in my case, I wouldn't last 90 minutes.

I remember seeing an interview with a strawberry farmer who said that, in 25 years of growing the crop, he had never had a single U.S. citizen approach him for a job working in his fields.

So what do you think? Just how soft are the hands of Generation X? I grew a strawberry patch once. It was more patch than strawberry. The hot July moon bore witness to my pathetic little berries. ;)

Something Happened Somewhere Turning said...

There was a time in my younger days, when I would wake early in the morning and go out into the field and help my dad om his ranch in Texas until noon. We'd stop for a few hours and when the temperature dropped we would resume our chores. I know I had at least that much in me and probably a little more.
Today I shudder to think what some would do in the field. The old work ethic is hard to find anymore. It is truly sad.

P.S. I just love this banner you have on your blog.
