Too Much Screen Time Makes for Generation Z for Zombies, Zoned Out and Zapped
Zombie Generation is a claymation video by Josh Strnad. He calls himself a stenographer for the voices inside his head. Check it out.
Kinda scary, huh?
I grow more and more concerned every day about the number of hours my kids spend in front of the TV, computer and iPad. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that kids under 2 years old not watch any TV and that those older than two watch no more than one to two hours a day of quality programming.
My kids watch TV before school and after school. Before dinner, they play outside, but after homework they play on the Wii. It’s very easy for them to rack up three hours a day in no time flat, and the weekends are worse! This makes me feel like a colossal failure as a parent.
So, we’ve started to take some small steps to remedy the situation, because to be honest, their personalities are starting to change. I really think it’s mostly the Wii. I don’t like it at all.
For starters, we replaced the net on the trampoline. The Oklahoma wind tattered and tore the last one to shreds. So, now the kids are playing outside more even though it can still be very chilly this time of year.
We also bought a family pass to the Oklahoma City Zoo. We went on Sunday and I posted a few Instagrams. We hope to go one afternoon a week for just a couple hours after school.
We tried a family pass to the Oklahoma City Museum of Art a couple years ago, but the kids were not entirely ready for it. They wanted to run through it, which totally stressed out the docents not to mention me.
Yesterday, I got this awesome brochure in the mail. For $85 I can get a family membership to the museum and it comes with a $20 gift card to the museum gift shop. It’s probably the only place in all of Oklahoma I truly love to shop, because I generally hate shopping.
Anyway, I’d also like to get a membership to the Science Museum of Oklahoma, but I tell you what, these memberships can get pricey. The thing is, I’m sure they’re entirely more affordable than the therapy I’ll need should my beloved children turn into zombies.
Some have suggested that the Z in Generation Z stands for:
Z like Zombies
Z like Zeros
Z like Zapped of all intelligence and critical thinking
Z like on Zoloft
Z like Zoned out
Z like Zaftig…and so on and so forth.

Those museum memberships are wonderful. Eons ago, when I last worked in Oklahoma City, my wife bought me a membership to the Cowboy Hall of Fame (that is what it will always be to me.) I worked right by there and I zipped over there once every week or two at lunch and wandered around. Many of the paintings and sculptures became like old friends to me. A great way to destress in the middle of the day.
