I’m always wondering about how to be happy. What about you?
On the way to the grocery store the other day, I tuned into The Splendid Table with Lynne Rossetto Kasper. Dan Buettner was her guest. He’s the best-selling author who came up with Blue Zones — places where more people reach the age of 100 than anywhere else. Dan says if we eat steel cut oatmeal (McCann’s Irish Oatmeal, for example) with walnuts every morning we’ll be 20 to 30 percent happier all day long. You can’t beat that, so I bought some.
The oatmeal has tryptophan, the happiness hormone. Walnuts are high in Omega 3 fatty acid and act as a natural anti-depressant.
Maybe I’m easily influenced, but I seriously feel happier on the mornings I eat this stuff. I don’t want another bowl immediately after I finish it either, which is exactly what happens with every other cereal I eat. That’s because McCann’s Oatmeal is super low in sugar – like zilch.
The Fed Up Challenge
Speaking of sugar, have you heard about Katie Couric’s new film FED UP? It’s about the sugar addiction that’s killing Americans. Did you know Generation Z is the first generation of children not expected to live as long as their parents? Is sugar reducing their life expectancy? The film opened up in parts of the country Yesterday (May 9). Click here to see the official trailer. Visit the Fed Up Facebook page and website.
Join me and take the 10-Day Sugar Free Challenge.
Do you have any suggestions for how to be happy that involved food?
