It’s been several years since Melanie Shankle wrote this hilarious post, The Life and Times of My Hair, on her Big Mama blog but it still makes me laugh. Here is one of the photos complete with acid-washed background featured in that must-read post.
I don’t know what I love more — her spiral perm, the innocent pom-pom uniform (this is what they wear today), the saddle oxford dance shoes or those glorious gloves. They were, by the way, the hallmark of 80s dance routines!
For a brief time, I attended Chester W. Nimitz High School in a Dallas suburb. The dance team, known as the Vikas, wore similar gloves. They were white on one side and blue on the other. Throughout their routines, they would alternate the colors of the gloves. In one instance all palms toward the audience would be blue and then they’d all bust a move and the palms would face out white. That pom=pom squad (pompon?) was one of the most glorious things I saw during my high school years.
Melanie Shankle Books
Shankle is one of my favorite writers and bloggers. I’ve read all three of her books, which are as follows:
I especially loved listening to Nobody’s Cuter than You: A Memoir about the Beauty of Friendship on audio. It’s a book that will make you regret that one friend you didn’t fight for. It’s a Gen X memoir about girlfriends, tried and true, that sings and laughs and cries. As a bonus, Shankle has a great Texas twang. It’s special and so is her writing.
