This is a photo of the 1987 Drum Majorettes of America (DMA) pageant winners including the winner of a top twirling title, America’s Most Beautiful Majorette. The photo depicts popular pageant styles of the late 80s and early 1990s.
DMA is one of several baton twirling organizations in the United States. Others include, but are not limited to the National Baton Twirling Association, Unites States Twirling Association, and the Amateur Athletic Union – Baton Twirling. My daughter Bridgy is an NBTA twirler; however, she’s attending her first USTA contest this summer and she may go to the Junior Olympics in Houston in August.
We will be heading down to Texas soon for a big contest and just recently returned from a contest in Salina, Kansas. I cherish these trips so much! We have such great conversations on the road. I wouldn’t trade these trips for anything! Staying in noisy hotels can sometimes be a drag but we make up for it with stops at Buc-ees, the best convenience store in the universe.
Bridgy recently won her baton twirling pageant at the Oklahoma State Baton Twirling Championship. She also won state solo and state X-strut, which is sort of like ballet with a baton. I’m so proud of her! Sadly, because of the pandemic, baton twirling nationals was canceled for 2020 and 2021. Hopefully, we will return to Notre Dame and America Youth on Parade in July 2022.
Baton twirling is something that continues to fill our lives with a lot of fun and joy. Be sure to follow our latest project, The Vintage Baton Twirler on Instagram!
This is great! Glad to hear your daughter is twirler… I twirled in Ohio in the mid to late 80s(NBTA)… best days ever!
We love it so much!! Such a wonderful community and culture to be part of.
