“And, this has nothing to do with Generation X.”
The other day I posted a First Communion photo on Facebook and someone left a comment saying, “And, this has nothing to do with Generation X.” My page isn’t for her. ? There are LOTS of Gen-X groups and pages on Facebook these days representing many varieties and flavors. Mine, https://www.facebook.com/TheJenniferChronicles, was one of the first if not the first, and admittedly, it foundered for years.
I started it in November 2009, and at the time, it was a very weird thing to do. It was right up there with starting a Gen-X blog. ? A decade or more ago when I went for job interviews, older generations would ask me things like, “Tell us about this Gen-X thing you’re writing about. What’s this all about?”
I took a lot of heat for blogging about my generation because we aren’t supposed to EXIST or ADVANCE or GROW or ASCEND. It’s been painful for many of us, and my goal has always been this: TO DOCUMENT YOUR EXISTENCE and CELEBRATE YOUR LIFE. I SEE YOU. Thank you for seeing me.
Today, I shared this post and a beautiful photo. When I posted it, I thought it was a First Communion picture, but someone expertly pointed out that the girls are wearing halos and angels’ wings! It looks like the First Communion dresses debuted as angel costumes the following December. I love it!
I have long documented the religious experiences of Generation X. In addition to posting about pop culture, I’ve covered faith (Bar Mitzvahs, First Communions, Baptist Girl’s Auxiliary, VBS, etc.), field trips, playgrounds, sports, proms, holidays, toys, trips, parents, friends and much more, and I will continue doing so as time and inspiration allow.
This photo was taken in the early 1980s on Glendale Boulevard near Saint Teresa of Avila School and Catholic Church, Los Angeles. I purchased the photo in April 2020 and was happy to share it with everyone today.
Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the Word and my soul shall be healed.

It has everything to do with Generation X. Especially Southern California Gen X. We’ve been a mix of cultures here long before the rest of the country. The freeway underpass means more than you can ever know. Thank you.

People can be so nasty lately. And you’re absolutely right, your page isn’t for her. You keep doing what you are and making our gen feel seen. It means a lot to me &many others I’m sure. Great pic. God bless 💗
