He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him. I saw this green smiley face on the old Osler Building in Oklahoma City’s Midtown District last night. For the most part, I’ve stopped photographing graffiti. My interest waned and my camera’s on the blink, […]
A Beautiful Collection of Graffiti Pictures
Several years ago, I photographed a lot of graffiti. I like to think of it as an act of listening. The writer Brenda Ueland said it's the only way to really love someone. And, graffiti artists need and want to be heard.
So, for a few years I documented their work and listened to what the graff writers and artists in my community had to say. I learned a lot from all that listening and a lot of graff writers wrote to me. They wrote to me more than anybody else ever has. Among the subjects I photographed were:
- Street and guerrilla art
- Sticker bombs
- Wheat pastes
- Cellophane graffiti
I hope you enjoy these posts. What do you hear? By the way, the cellophane graffiti was my favorite. First and last time I ever saw it was in the park that day.
Also, the more I listened, the more I heard. Everywhere I went for a two years, I saw nothing but this special form of street art. When I stopped listening, I stopped seeing it.
Tornado Mural This morning my friend Leana posted a picture of this tornado mural located on the outskirts of downtown Oklahoma City. It’s located on SW 5th Street just west of Broadway. The entire thing was created using spray paint. A lot of spray paint. I took Sullivan to see it during our Saturday morning […]
The latest street art to grace the urban byways of Oklahoma City is a wonderful wheat paste in The Paseo by artist Sam Douglas. It’s located on Walker Avenue just south of NW 30th Street outside the Twisted Root Gallery. This trash dumpster has always been such an eyesore, and it’s conspicuous location makes it […]
Graffiti Wednesday I first became acquainted with Jones, Oklahoma in the 1990s when my college roommate and friend, Jeanie, taught Kindergarten at the local elementary. She loved Jones and I loved to hear her stories about all the locals. I never visited the small town, however, until a few years ago when I was photographing […]
OKLA HOME LAND is the latest graffiti to grace an Oklahoma City wall made famous by a recent marriage proposal. It’s located in the Plaza District, and a guy asked his girlfriend to marry him, it was just the ugly cinder block side of the Coin Op Laundry. OKLA HOME LAND was probably painted in […]
[Graffiti Wednesday] I pass this house sometimes on my way to the kids’ school. I always wonder what inspired the owner to use these colors. Today, I noticed, that this warning sign vandalized with purple and pink heart graffiti matches the house. Maybe it’s a conspiracy. Ha! Graffiti on utility boxes and signs is pretty […]
