Funny Car Stories | Bald Tires in the Rain

Guest post by Billy Elliott | Used Car Stories

Did I ever tell you about how dad used to get us tires for the Oldsmobile? Behind the tire store, they put the old worn tires that were “take offs”, cast aside after people bought NEW ones. Well, Dad and I would go there at night after they were closed and I’ll never forget the day we found all four of a MATCHED SET that fit our car. Dad acted like he won the lottery!

Speaking of tires, did I ever tell you about the time Dad got stopped by the highway patrol in our family wagon for driving on BALD TIRES in a rainstorm? After the cop ticketed dad, dad explained to him that the car now would not start, and asked the cop for a “push-start.”

The cop asked Dad if the car was a stick shift, and Dad told him no, it was an automatic transmission.

“You can’t push start an automatic,” the cop said.

“Oh, I’ve done it lots of times,” Dad exclaimed. “You just have to get me going about 35 or 40 miles an hour and it will start.”

The cop just shook his head. He uses his push-bar and soon we are whizzing down Hacienda Boulevard in the RAIN. The speedometer reaches 50 and STILL, the car doesn’t start.

The cop car backs off and Dad pulls the wounded Chevy to the curb once again. The cop walked up to the car and asked why the engine hadn’t started like Dad said it would. Only then did Dad realize that he forgot to have the ignition key in the “ON” position.

So here we go again, this time with the key turned ON, and just like Dad said, at about 40 miles an hour, the big V-8 roared to life and away we went ahead of the Highway Patrol.

I couldn’t wait to get home.

Do you have any funny car stories?

I think your Dad and mine have a lot in common. Mine used a lot of used tires back the 60’s also.

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

Tears are rolling down my face! I had never heard the story about dumpter diving for tires OR the cop push-starting dad’s car! I can’t stop laughing!

You must get Bill to tell his story about dad starting that big Chevy wagon in the morning – EVERY MORNING. (Our neighbors really hated us!) Nobody tells it like he does….

His stories rank right up there with Jeff Foxworthy’s stand-up.

    Thanks for sharing!
    Love you both….
    Lin
