Rights of Passage: The Learners Permit and Drivers Ed

Learning to fly, but I ain’t got wings…
From Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, 1991

This is my 14-year-old daughter, Juliette. Isn’t she adorable!? Here she is being silly with my mom’s dog.

The thing is, she doesn’t really look silly. She looks grown up.

Lately, she’s been reminding me that she will be driving soon. {{{{Driving}}}} Excuse me while I catch my breath and check my pocketbook to make sure I can afford insurance for a teenager.

I’ve been getting mentally prepared for this momentous occasion for at least a year. We’re looking for an old Volvo station wagon (to wow the hairy-legged boys) and reading up on learners’ permits, driver ed, etc. I found this site, Education 4 Drivers, about which she is quite dreamy. It features practice permit tests from various states including Oklahoma.

There’s a reason 18 years pass before children leave home, and generally 16 before they can drive on their own. It takes at least this long to let them go!

Anyway, Juliette is a wonderful person and has had a terrific junior high career. She nails everything, so I know she will master driving! I’m looking forward to our first road trip together.

If you know of an old Volvo station wagon we can buy, let us know. We’d fly to California or New York just to pick it up. It just needs to make it back to Oklahoma! By the way, New York and California send a decent amount of traffic to my site, so here are links to the DMV practice permit test for New York and the practice permit test for California.I bet if you can survive the DMV in either of those states you can survive anything.

Jen, you have my prayers and best wishes for your search for that old Volvo and for your daughter’s driver’s training (especially AFTER she she gets that permit!)  Congrats on such a great daughter–and you have my sympathies there in OK for the absence of your governor on the tarmac to greet the President!

Ha-ha love the California DMV comment! Although I should worry about karma as I have to go to one on Friday!
