Jennifer by Styx

One of my favorite songs from my high school days is Desert Moon by Dennis DeYoung of Styx fame. Eight years earlier, he sang Jennifer on his 1976 Crystal Ball album. I believe DeYoung wrote this song as he was the primary lyricist for Styx, but I can’t find documentation for it. Kind of wild. DeYoung was 29 and the inviting Jennifer in the song is 17.

Jennifer

She drinks her sherry wine
She keeps her lady’s love for me all the time
She’s seventeen, barely old enough to cry
A child in her father’s eyes
A woman every night

Her love,
Gives me the power
Her dreams carry me on
Jennifer, so inviting
That I sing

Jennifer
She took me by surprise
She told me that she’s much too young to keep me satisfied
Jennifer, ah so delicate and shy
A child in her mother’s eyes but
A woman every night

Her love,
Gives me the power
Her dreams carry me on
Jennifer, so inviting
That I sing…

I think I must have driven my parents insane playing Styx over and over!
