Today, I’m privileged to share with you a wonderful children’s book, “Around the World with Kate & Mack”, from Wycliffe Bible Translators. The book chronicles the adventures of Kate, an M.K. (missonary’s kid) and her mackinaw, Mack, who travel around the globe discovering different cultures and countries. From A (Arop, a language spoken in Papua New Guinea) to Zinza (a language spoken in Tanzania) they learn about languages, and impart to young readers how important it is for the Bible to reach people of all languages.
There has been no book in my life more important to me than the Bible. Every day, I draw from the poetry of Psalms, the wisdom of Proverbs and the parables of Jesus. I love the allegories and countless metaphors which inspired me to become a writer. When I read the Bible I feel better about everything. I realize my trials are not without purpose, and that even when it seems the entire world has gone mad, there is still hope to be found in God’s love.
I cannot imagine not being able to read it. The Bible informs and guides my entire existence, and it is the most important book I will ever share with my children.
So, I’m so happy to introduce them to Kate and Mack. I’m so glad that a book like this exists so they can learn just how precious the Bible is to people. Many have risked their lives to translate it so that others may experience the hope it provides. It also gave me an opportunity to talk to the kids about the Native American tribe to which they belong, but know little or nothing about — the Achumawi tribe based in Northern California. The Bible has never been translated into Achumawi, and only three generations separate them from their late, great grandparents who spoke it fluently.
“Around the World with Kate & Mack” is actually an updated version of the Wycliffe classic children’s book, From Akebu to Zapotec. It features 100 colored pages of photographs, fun illustrations and awesome facts. One of the things I love about it is that it is not really designed to be read in one sitting. My son Sullivan is reading about two adventures each day. This allows him to truly enjoy all that this book has to offer. Like the Bible, drink slowly and enjoy.
As a bonus, the book has a companion web page where kids can play games and get new content that complements the book.
