George “Meadowlark” Lemon of Harlem Globetrotters fame has died at 83. The “dazzling court jester” was also known as the clown prince of basketball.
Those of us who grew up in the 1970s watching Saturday morning TV will remember him well. He starred not only in the Harlem Globetrotters cartoon, but also numerous episodes of Scooby-Doo and even appeared on Gilligan’s Island with the rest of his team.
I loved the Globetrotters so much as a kid. I remember some boys from my school went to see them live and this thought alone was thrilling to me. Watching them on Scooby Doo was a total hoot. Those “meddling kids” were always safer with the Globetrotters around to help them!
Today, the Harlem Globetrotters are beloved by a whole new generation. Click here to see their 2016 schedule, which is cram-packed full of appearances.
RIP Meadowlark Lemon.
The Great Meadowlark Lemon of the legendary Harlem Globetrotters dies at 83. Rest In Basketball Heaven Sir!
