Beautiful Irish Girls, First Communion, Early 1980s
DAILY PHOTO: First Communion, the early 1980s. I love pictures that reflect the religious and spiritual histories of young Gen-Xers — First Communions, Baptisms, Dedications, Bar Mitzvahs, Bat Mitzvahs, church services, church camps, etc. I thought this picture was timely because it’s the season of First Communions in the U.S. Sadly, all have been postponed because of the global pandemic. This picture, however, is of Irish Gen-X girls. It’s from a documentary about First Communion dresses. The source is the RTE Archives.
If pictures have anything important to say to future generations, it’s this: I was here. I existed. I was young, I was happy, and someone cared enough about me in this world to take my picture.
I collect old snapshots, Polaroid, 35mm slides and other vintage photographs, which I frequently share on the blog. Sign up to receive posts featuring these often rare finds. Occasionally, you might receive an original picture I’ve taken. If you are already signed up for regular posts you do not need to sign up for this feature.
