Latest Trip To Mary’s
July 20, 2025
At the flea market this morning, beneath the blistering canopy of July and half-spoken haggles, I found a peacock in a long wooden box. Its feathers caught flashes of sunlight, but didn’t move.
Sad, isn’t it? To stuff something so beautiful into a box that looks like a makeshift coffin.
One thing I know for sure: this isn’t heaven.
Here are a few more pictures from today.
I see this and I think two things. 1) Of course there is a God. 2) What an amazing color palette. Also, orange eyes. Yikes.
This goat looks like she stopped by the beauty shop before heading over to the flea market.
I had to go crawling into Birding Reddit to ask what kind of birds these were. The birders didn’t say a word, but somehow still managed to make me feel like an idiot who didn’t belong. Was it my username, Gen-X Moderator? The profile picture of a haggard 1978 Ballerina Barbie? I bear not an ounce of existential dread.
Honestly, I bet every last one of them plays pickleball.
The birds, by the way, are Rock Pigeons. Doves. I thought they were an exotic species from Venezuela or something.
Louisa would have been horrified to see this, and she did see it many times. During her lifetime, especially the last decade or better, she worked so hard to make Oklahoma a safer place for animals, especially pigs. I miss her every day. I’m not going to say she’s in a better place, but of course, she is.
Wish the Wind Would Blow Me
Here is a great song by Bob Schneider, written in 2007.
I wish I was a baby bear
Sleeping in the brown
Winter grass in April
While the sun was going down
I wish my shoes were empty
And I was still in bed
With you there beside me
With your dreams inside your head
I wish the world would do
What I want it to
And I wish the wind would blow me
Blow me back to you
Well, I wish your mom was ugly
And your dad was ugly too
Then they couldn’t have a girl
To be as beautiful as you
I wish I was a tightrope walker
With legs made out of gold
I’d hold you in my golden legs
And never let you go
I wish the world would do
What I want it to
And I wish the wind would blow me
Blow me back to you
Well, I wish I could see Jesus
Shining in the sky
And he could let me know
That everything will be alright
I wish I knew that God’s love
Was all I’d ever need
I’d cut my candy teeth for fun
And let the good times bleed
Oh, I wish the world would do
What I want it to
I wish the world would do
What I want it to
And I wish the wind would blow me
Blow me back to youom today.

Great Flea Market Find: 1930s Bakelite Manicure Set, Orange Juice
My latest flea market find is a 1930s Premier Premalite / Bakelite manicure set in orange juice. The swirl of colors in the early plastic is why it's identified in color as it is. Premalite came after Bakelite, a type of molded plastic that was used to make kitchen...
