Every Casey Kasem Long Distance Dedication Song (1978-1999)

I discovered Casey Kasem’s American Top 40 countdown when I started driving at age 14. We lived in a small town in Southeast Kansas, which explains why I was running errands in my mom’s Ford Granada without a license. I made every excuse to head to the store during the show and would linger in the parking lot, always hoping to catch the weekly long-distance dedication. My clock radio at home couldn’t pull in the signal, so the car radio became my lifeline.

While I listened, cars full of boys from Oklahoma pulled in and out of the lot. Just a mile north of the state line, that convenience store drew weekend crowds of Okies looking to buy beer. In Kansas you only had to be 18, while in Oklahoma the law was 21.

Looking back, I realize how much music gave me cover fire from the chaos of home. And although my college newspaper editor once dismissed them as sappy, I loved the long-distance dedication letters Kasem read. To me, they were the best part of the show.

The dedications ran from 1978 until Kasem’s original AT40 sign-off in 1988, later returning on his other syndicated shows in the 1990s. Today you can still hear the show on digitally remastered rebroadcasts every weekend. iHeartRadio’s Classic American Top 40 channel and SiriusXM’s 70s on 7 and 80s on 8 often include the original dedications.

Below is a list of all the songs ever featured in the long-distance dedications from 1978-1999. They were compiled on a tribute site by Rob Durkee more than 25 years ago. I didn’t include any from the 2000s.

You are missing a few LDDs. Each of the following were the third LDD aired during its show:

12/11/1982 “Truly” by Lionel Richie which was also #4 that week. It was from Scott to Adrienne.
9/14/1985 “Mahogany” by Diana Ross. It was from Patti to her friend Donna, for whom she got an autographed photo of Diana Ross at a concert.
9/21/1985 “Don’t Walk Away” by Rick Springfield. It was from Dawn to her young husband Mike.
10/22/1985 “Cherish” by Kool and the Gang, from Diane to her father after her mother’s passing.
5/31/1986 “You’ve Got a Friend” by Carole King, from Rebecca to Philip
12/13/1986 “You Give Love A Bad Name” by Bon Jovi, from Angie and Tracy to Chris.

Thank you. As soon as I get a chance I’ll update the list. I appreciate it! These dedications meant so much to so many people.

Thank you for all the time and “Dedication” you have put into this site. My LDD was read somewhere in this 89-91 years. It was to my mother who left me just a few years prior (17 years old then) Now in my 50’s she is still missing. I would really like to hear the LDD and the letter I wrote then. Can you help? The song was Wind Beneath my wings. 1074 might be the right one. Maybe ????

Were you able to find it?! I’m so sad to hear your mother is still missing. I’m going to look, now and see if I can find it.

Hi I am trying to find a LD&D my wife did for my son. It was in 1999 and I don’t see it listed. Is there anywhere I can find it and save it? It was “Baby when I see you smile” by Bad English.

I don’t have any other information than what I posted. But, maybe this comment will trigger a response from someone else more knowledgeable. I hope you locate it. It sounds amazing.

I want to see a book following up on these stories. The one I heard yesterday was from a girl who’s 19 yr old cousin had disappeared. I did a Google search once I pulled in my driveway and found out that they found his body in the trunk of a submerged car a few months later. (Would prefer to find out stories that actually had happy endings, but any follow-up would be interesting to hear decades later.)

I completely agree. It’s time for the Long Distance Dedication book!

My friend and I wrote to the Show requesting this song in honor of our Graduating Class at St Francis School of Nursing in New Castle, Pa.. Dedicating it to our Parents, Families & Friends
We received a Letter back saying it was accepted and it played on the radio.the weekend we graduated We taped it with a recorder ( yes you read that correctly – tape recorder! It was 1981 kids!)

    It was very memorable ☺️

379 – 8/28/82 – Theme from The Greatest American Hero was my long distance dedication to my High School Softball Team. We lost a heartbreaker in the finals of the State Championships.

I don’t have a good copy of this. All I have is a cassette copy from the radio that was captured in 1982.

If you transferred it to digital I’d post it here as long as the copyright gods didn’t try to jail me or fine me half my retirement.

I would love to find a list of the songs and the story that Casey Kasem told that he received from the listener. Thank you for this!

You’re welcome. I wish the stories would be made into a book. They were so good.

12/08/1990 – Whitney Houston. This was my long distant dedication to my soul mate who passed August 27, 1988, hit by a drunk driver. Erin Ryan’s dedication to Quentin Hoenig

Wow. Thank you for letting us know. I wish they’d put a book together of all the dedications. Do you still have a copy of your letter? If so, I would love to publish it on this post. I lost someone I loved in a drunk driving accident, also, in 1988, although he lingered in a coma for six years. The loss never goes away. Thank you for stopping by, Erin.
